In 2021, our company completed one of our most impressive projects yet: Hale Ohia, a stunning home located in the Kahalawai Neighborhood of Kukui’ula, Kauai, Hawaii.

The project is a masterpiece, from the architecture to the interior design, and even down to the selection of small appliances, dishes, and flatware.
Pu'uwai was responsible for every aspect of the home's construction, ensuring a consistent and cohesive vision throughout the entire process.
One of the defining characteristics of Hale Ohia is its unique blend of cosmopolitan and Pacific design elements. The house exudes a Polynesian vibe with a mix of styles and influences from Asia, the West Coast of the Americas, and other Pacific Rim cultures. This blend of aesthetics creates a warm and inviting atmosphere while maintaining a contemporary edge.
The home's location in the Kahalawai Neighborhood of Kukui’ula, Kauai, Hawaii, also plays a role in its design. Every living and sleeping room is located "Makai" of the building, meaning each room has an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. This feature adds an undeniable sense of luxury to the property, immersing its inhabitants in the natural beauty of Kaua’i
The use of natural wood is also a defining characteristic of the design. Warm woods are used copiously throughout the home, providing a sense of comfort and relaxation to the interior spaces. Native Ohia logs were incorporated into the home's structure and aesthetics, giving the space a grounded and authentic feel.
One of the most impressive features of Hale Ohia is its poolside "pai pai." The structure is an open-air gathering space made of native materials, traditionally used for entertaining. The pai pai includes an 18'-long live-edge bar facing the ocean, a stone bar facing submerged bar seats in the pool, and all the amenities needed for the perfect outdoor party. This includes a restaurant griddle for smash burgers, a large BBQ, an ice maker, refrigerated drawers, a wine cooler, and even a pizza oven. The entire structure is sunken in the ground, allowing pool bar service to be at eye level with the pai pai. A traditional Polynesian thatched roof completes the look, creating a unique and luxurious outdoor space that's perfect for entertaining.
In designing and building Hale Ohia, Pu'uwai was inspired by the architecture and culture of the Pacific Rim.
